At Knowsy Kids, we understand the power of fictional characters. It is for this reason that our Knowsy World characters are not just tools to educate but tools to reflect. We know it is essential for children to see reflections of themselves and their lives in our characters’ stories, and we have provided narrative to support this.
Our Knowsy World characters teach children about different cultures around the world. They help children to identify with individual countries and cultures by encouraging connections between home and community. It is also easier for children to connect with them when they see characters who look like them, have similar hobbies to them and much more.
They also promote perspectives and build their knowledge of different ethnic groups. Children will develop their understanding of cultural diversity and develop positive attitudes about living and functioning in our multicultural and global society.
Hello, Knowsy fans! I’m Andrew, but my friends and family call me “Andy.” I am eleven years old and live in Manchester, England. When I grow up, I would like to become a professional footballer like Raheem Sterling!
My dad is from Jamaica, and my mum is from England. Living between two cultures is not always easy!
For example, last week Friday, my mum excitedly announced, “we are having fish and chips tonight!”
But, my dad replied, “No, let’s have jerk chicken and festival!”
I practise both my parents’ cultures because they are both a part of who I am, and play a role in my identity. I value the way I dress, the language I speak and the food I eat – all of it! I always wear the bracelet my Granny, my dad’s mum, gave me. It has the Jamaican flag on it and shows that I am proud to be Jamaican too!
As my nan, my mum’s mum, would always say
“Every child is a different kind of flower, and all together, we make this world a beautiful garden.”
Hello, my name is Keisha! I am ten years old, and I was born in Kingston, Jamaica. When I was two years old, my family emigrated to New York, a large city in the United States of America.
Living in New York is fun and exciting, there are lots of things to do, and I love my friends and family. My parents are still very connected to our Jamaican heritage, and this has influenced my upbringing. They are strict but very loving, and they are always encouraging me to excel at school. Thankfully, I love school! I also have many hobbies, like listening to music, dancing and running.
My love for running started last year when my parents took me to Jamaica to visit my extended family. While in Jamaica, I went to ‘Girls’ Champs’ an athletics competition for girls from schools across the country. I was so inspired, it made me want to become an athlete! When I returned to New York, I started my athletics training, and when I grow up, I would like to be as famous as Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce!
Training is fun but tiring, so my parents always remind me “If yuh waan gud, yuh nose haffi run!”
Hi everyone, nice to meet you all!
My name is Emily, and I am eight years old. I live on a farm in Kent, England. I love animals, and when I grow up, I would like to be a vet.
I love my home in Kent and my culture, especially the food! My favourite is shepherd’s pie, a baked dish made with lamb and mashed potatoes… yummy! My family and I frequently visit historical sites and buildings across England, like old castles and churches, and monuments like Stonehenge!
I also love the royal family and have visited Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle more times than I can count!
My mum and dad are my role models, and they have taught me how to be confident! I always speak my mind, and I am never shy. I love my walking my dog, helping on the farm and playing in the park. I have many friends from different parts of the world and love learning all about new people and places!
Hello, my name is Shankar and I am nine years old. I live in New Delhi, the busy and bustling capital of India. I live with my parents and my sister.
New Delhi is a wonderful place to live because it’s filled with lots of amazing sights, smells and sounds. I love visiting exciting local attractions with my parents. We have strolled through the beautiful Lodi Gardens and have bought lovely clothing at the Khan Market. I am obsessed with cricket and play for a local boys’ team with many of my friends. I am a very good batsman and last week my team won a game by fifty runs. We were so happy!
Hi everyone, my name is Mark and I’m from Jamaica . I am seven years old. I live in Portmore, Jamaica with my parents. I really love Jamaican music and play the guitar in a reggae band with three of my friends. We have performed for many people and one day I hope we will be famous around the world, like so many other Jamaican singers.
My home country is wonderful and I love living so close to a great place: Hellshire Beach! It’s so much fun going there with my family on a hot day. We swim, play ball games on the sand and enjoy the delicious fried fish and festival on sale.
Hi my name is Sadi and I am from Pakistan. I’m 7 years old and everyone describes me as a happy child.
I believe life is all about the choices we make, and when I grow older, my dream is to become a journalist! I am always questioning my family and neighbours so I can uncover and write a good story!
My family and I are very close. We always eat, travel and go to the mosque together. I love learning about my religion, especially from my grandmother. She teaches me good morals, like supporting the elderly, taking care of my siblings, maintaining a strong community. We sometimes sit and talk for hours and I am always amazed by how wise she is! She encourages me to explore the world with sayings like “there are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child. There are seven million. ”
In addition to talking to my grandmother, I love spending time with my father and his brothers. They tell me all about their days at work and joke about the mischief they got up to as children! They also teach me how to play cricket and badminton. I am a fast learner so one day I will be better than all of them!
Hi everyone, Kofi is my name!
